PhD student position

We are currently looking for a highly motivated person to join the new research group of Gandalf Lechner as a PhD student. The student will belong to the mathematics department of the University of Erlangen and will work on a project at the interface of mathematical physics and operator algebras / functional analysis, connected to the recently started Heisenberg project “Quantum Fields and Operator Algebras“.

Possible topics include the construction of non-trivial quantum field theoretic models with advanced operator-algebraic tools, the analysis of information-theoretic properties of existing models, and axiomatic investigations of the mathematical structure of quantum field theory. While the motivation for these topics is mostly drawn from physics (quantum field theory), the actual research work is on mathematical questions in operator algebras and functional analysis, mostly relating to modular theory and inclusions of von Neumann algebras (subfactors). The chapter “Algebraic constructive quantum field theory: Integrable models and deformation techniques” of the book “Advances in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory” reviews some relevant research in this area and can give a first impression of the field.

In addition to the mathematical physics and operator algebras research group, the scientific environment at Erlangen consists of several other research groups at the mathematics and physics departments with related interests, such as representation theory, operator algebras, algebraic aspects of mathematical physics, and loop quantum gravity. The applicant should have an MSc in mathematics or physics and basic knowledge in functional analysis and either operator algebras or quantum field theory.
