DESCRIPTION:Conformal Causal Spaces and Nets of Real Subspaces &#8211\
 ; Vortragender: Karl-Hermann Neeb\, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg &#8211\; Ei
nladender: K.-H. Neeb Abstract: The natural context for conformal caus
al geometry are causal flag manifolds G/P and their coverings. Beyond
dimension 2 the conformal groups are finite-dimensional and\, in the i
rreducible context\, G/P is a conformal compactification of a euclidea
n Jordan algebra. For rank r = 2\, these are precisely the Minkowski s
paces. The simply connected coverings of these spaces carry global cau
sal orders and are also known under the name simple Jordan spacetimes.
We briefly discuss the classification of these spaces and which unita
ry representations of G permit nets of real subspaces based on open su
bsets of M and its coverings. If time permits\, we also discuss locali
 ty conditions\, which\, for Minkowski space\, include Huygens&#8217\;
 Principle.

as the the cornerstone in establishing the Atiyah-Singer index theory
via the K-theory method. The classical deformation-to-the-normal-cone

DESCRIPTION:Embedding Topological Dynamics over Amenable Groups into C

siteit Leuven &#8211\; Einladender: Kang Li Abstract: Given any homeom
orphism $T: Xto X$ on a compact metrizable space\, it is not hard to s
ee that the topological dynamical system $(X\,T)$ embeds into the Hilb
ert cube $big( [0\,1]^{mathbb{N}}big)^{mathbb{Z}}$ equivariantly with
the index shift. It is a much more subtle question (even when $T$ is a
ssumed to be minimal) whether one can always embed into $big( [0\,1]^d
big)^{mathbb{Z}}$\, for some natural number $d$ or even $d=1$\, with
the index shift. The systematic negative answer for this question was
given by Lindenstrauss and Weiss as an application of their concept of
mean dimension. Shortly afterwards\, Lindenstrauss proved that small
enough mean dimension leads to the existence of such embeddings. This
phenomenon eventually gave rise to the Lindenstrauss-Tsukamoto conject
ure\, which is a direct dynamical analog of the Menger-Nöbeling theor
em for topological spaces. Groundbreaking advances have taken place fo
r the case of single homeomorphisms\, but the entire problem makes per
fect sense for topological actions of other groups. In this talk\, I w
ill talk about a partial verification of the Lindenstrauss-Tsukamoto c
onjecture that is applicable to actions of countable amenable groups.
This is based on joint work with Emiel Lanckriet.

is a nonlinear version of the notion of a complex Hilbert space: The v
ector space axioms are dropped while the notion of inner product\, now
called a coherent product\, is kept. Every coherent space can be uniq
uely embedded into a Hilbert space\, its completed quantum space\, by
suitably extending the coherent product to an inner product. In the in
teresting examples\, the coherent space is an extended classical phase
space\, and there is a quantization functor that turns the symmetries
of the coherent space into unitary operators in the corresponding qua
ntum space. Thus the quantum space is a representation space for quant
um dynamics. This provides a universal framework for quantization\, ex
tending the traditional geometric quantization of finite-dimensional s
ymplectic manifolds to more general situations\, and in particular to
the quantization of certain classical field theories. Fields defined b
y linear field equations can be quantized by means of Klauder spaces\,

as Araki-Woods algebras. These algebras generalize the construction of

tle introduction to a homology theory for étale groupoids first devel
oped by Crainic and Moerdijk in 2000. This theory has recently attract
ed a lot of attention from the operator algebras and topological dynam
ics communities. Applications in these areas largely deal with totally
disconnected étale groupoids and hence we will also be focussing on
this setting. My plan is to first introduce étale groupoids and give
a number of examples from different contexts. We will then turn to the
definition of groupoid homology\, develop some useful tools\, and tre

: Motivated by the Haag-Kastler theory of local observables in Quantum
Field Theory\, one is interested in unitary endomorphisms of standard
subspaces. Classical results in this context are given in the works o
f Borchers and Longo/Witten. In my PhD project I focus on one-paramete
r semigroups of these unitary endomorphisms. In the context of Borcher
s theorem a natural approach is to pass from one-parameter semigroups
of unitary endomorphisms of standard subspaces to reflection positive
unitary one- parameter groups\, while in the context of Longo/Witten o
ne thinks of these one-parameter semigroups as one-parameter semigroup
s of inner functions which are infinitesimally generated by Pick funct
ions. In this talk I will show how to pass from one picture to the oth
 er.

double models were introduced by Kitaev to obtain a realistic model fo
r a topological quantum computer. They are based on a directed ribbon
graph and a finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra. The ground sta
te of these models is a topological invariant of a surface\, i.e. only
depends on the homeomorphism class of the oriented surface but not th

the left regular (unitary) representation generates a C*-algebra of bo
unded operators on the Hilbert space L^2(G). J. Rosenberg proved in th
e 80&#8217\;s that a discrete group G is amenable provided its induced
C*-algebra forms a quasidiagonal set of operators on L^2(G)\, and he
conjectured that the converse also holds. The conjecture was confirmed
in 2015 by Tikuisis\, White\, and Winter\, and using methods of Ozawa
\, Rørdam\, and Sato for elementary amenable groups\, they showed the
stronger result that such group C*-algebras embed into a simple appro

roup $P$ by bundle automorphisms. Complementing recent progress B. Jan
ssens and K.H. Neeb on the case where the $P$-action on $M$ has no fix

 locally-convex Lie group $mathcal{G} := Gamma_c(mathcal{K})$ are studi

at some fixed point $a in M$ of the $P$-action. Under suitable assumpt

Pauli is well known in mathematical physics\, because it describes som
e relevant symmetries in quantum dynamical systems. It is less known i
ts structure of finite $2$-group of order $16$\, which may be decompos
ed in the central product of two of ist subgroups. From this perspecti
ve\, the Pauli group has an interesting structure at an algebraic leve
l as well. Here a topological perspective is added to the literature.
It is described the Pauli group as an appropriate quotient of the fund
amental group of $3$-dimensional Riemannian surfaces constructed as tw
 o distinct orbit spaces of the $3$-dimensional sphere $mathbb{S}^3$\;
one orbit space comes from the free action of the quaternion group $Q_
8$ on $mathbb{S}^3$\; another orbit space comes from a similar action
of the cyclic group $mathbb{Z}(4)$ of order $4$ on $mathbb{S}^3$. Appl
ications are illustrated for pseudo-fermionic operators\, introducing
a relevant framework of quantum mechanics. This suggests a physical in
terpretation for the topological decomposition\, which has been found
at an abstract level. The connection between groups of symmetries and
dynamical systems is in fact well known\, but looking specifically at
the algebraic and topological decompositions of the Pauli group\, we f

nt role in the theory of C*-algebras\, since there are an abundance of
examples of C*-algebras that can be described concretely as such grou
poid C*-algebras. To any locally compact étale groupoid one can assoc
iate two C*-algebras\, namely the full groupoid C*-algebra and the red
uced groupoid C*-algebra. There exists a useful description of a large
class of important states on the full groupoid C*-algebra. In this ta
lk I will report on a joint project with Sergey Neshveyev where we stu
dy which of these states that factors through the reduced groupoid C*-
algebra. I will introduce a new C*-norm on the group algebras of the i
sotropy groups of a locally compact étale groupoid\, and argue that t
his norm completely characterizes when the states we consider factors
through the reduced groupoid C*-algebra. I will then present examples
which illustrate that our C*-norm can coincide with the full norm\, th
at it can be a genuine exotic norm\, but that it in many standard exam

oughly speaking\, a ghost operator is often an infinite matrix such th
at its matrix entries vanish at the infinity. This notion was introduc
ed by Guoliang Yu in the study of the so-called coarse Baum-Connes con
jecture. It is a very central topic in coarse geometry and operator al
gebras with applications to provide counterexamples to the coarse Baum

Hecke pairs and K-theory Abstract: Defined by Shimura in the 50s\, Hec
ke pairs are almost normal inclusions of subgroups. Originally number
theoretic objects\, they were introduced to operator algebraists by th
e celebrated work of Bost and Connes when they discovered a C*-dynamic
al system whose partition function was the zêta function. To a Hecke

well as establishing new examples of groups satisfying the Baum-Connes

andard subspaces Abstract: Starting with a von Neumann algebra that ha
 s a cyclic and separating vector\, the Tomita-Takesaki theory allows t
o translate this setting to the theory of standard subspaces. Here\, m
otivated by the Haag-Kastler theory of local observables in Quantum Fi
eld Theory\, one considers certain groups of unitary operators and is
interested in the semigroup of these unitaries that map the standard s
ubspace into itself. Classical results in this context are given in th
e works of Borchers and Wiesbrock and by Longo/Witten. In my PhD proje
ct I primarily focus on one-parameter semigroups of unitary endomorphi
sms of standard subspaces. I show a way how to link these to reflectio
n positive Hilbert spaces and Hankel operators and in this context I i
nvestigate the unitary one-parameter semigroups appearing in the works
by Longo and Witten that come from so called Pick functions.

uced by T. Kobayashi (2004\, 2005) to give an unified explanation of m
ultiplicity-freeness property of representations of Lie groups which a
re realized in holomorphic sections of Hermitian holomorphic vector bu
ndles (Propagation theorem of multiplicity-freeness property for holom
orphic vector bundles). Many examples of strongly visible actions has
been found in connection with multiplicity-free representations. Then\
, we expect that multiplicity-free representations realized in holomor
phic sections have strongly visible actions on the base spaces. Recent
ly\, the classification problems of strongly visible actions are solve
d in various setting such as Hermitian symmetric spaces\, flag varieti
es\, linear spaces\, nilpotent orbits and reductive complex homogeneou

A duality between non-compact semisimple symmetric pairs and commutat
ive compact semisimple symmetric triads Abstract: A duality between no
n-compact semisimple symmetric pairs and commutative compact semisimpl
e symmetric triads. Abstract: It is a well-known fact that there is a
one-to-one correspondence between Riemannian semisimple symmetric pair
s of compact type and those of non-compact type. This correspondence i
s usually called the duality for Riemannian semisimple symmetric pairs
. In this talk\, I will give a survey of a generalization of the duali
ty to pseudo-Riemannian setting. Namely\, we provide an explicit descr
iption of a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes in n
on-compact pseudo-Riemannian semisimple symmetric pairs and those in c
ommutative compact semisimple symmetric triads. We call it the duality
theorem. If time allows\, I will mention the motivation on differenti
al geometry and its application to geometric structures of orbits of t
he symmetric subgroup actions on (not only Riemannian but also pseudo-
 Riemannian) symmetric spaces.

Selberg are functions of a complex variable $s$ and are associated wi
th the geodesic flow on the unit sphere bundle of a compact hyperbolic
manifold. Their representation by Euler-type products traces back to
the Riemann zeta function. In this talk\, we will present trace formul

extension of what was known in the finite case as subgroup commutativi
ty degree. After a short survey of the known results in the finite cas
e\, the profinite case will be discussed with details. The so called &
#8221\;topologically quasihamiltonian groups&#8221\; are described by
the case of subgroup commutativity degree equal to one. This is a join
t work with my Phd student Eniola Kazeem (University of Cape Town\, Ca
 pe Town\, South Africa).
